The death of Christianity in America

Wed Jul 1, 2009, 2:03 PM
Let me start this entry out with saying… I don’t hate CHRISTIANS.
Much of my family and many of my friends are of the Christian faith. My grandparents are the most Christian people you know. My grandparents on my father’s side were hardcore liberal atheists.
I grew up knowing two different sides to how the world was and is as I see it now. I went to church activities, I went to youth group, I celebrated holidays with both sides of my family on separate days and with different views.

As I have grown up, I have realized how jaded many Christians have become and how distorted their faith is. My therapist, whom I love very much, is of the Christian faith. She is liberal as I am and tremendously open minded; but holds her faith close. For her, it is the truth, just as much as science and psychology and politics. I envy her. I envy her that with all those facts, that faith is still alive; it’s beautiful.

I have also seen the ugly side of faith. I have seen how it can turn people into monsters. How many wars it has started and will continue to start. I see how it holds evolution back and I can see where it needs to stay.

Faith is just that. Faith is not fact. It is not science. It is not political. It is faith. People of the Christian faith do not need facts or valid proof of a God. That’s not what God is about. Knowing God is simply knowing that there is something in the Universe that made you. In regards to Christian beliefs, this God is all emotion. He is angry yet understanding, serene yet vengeful, loving yet hateful. He is all emotion and none of it at all. The belief is that love never dies, because love goes somewhere after death. Love is God and God is love. Yet… so much hate spurs forth.

The Bible talks of loving everyone around you and accepting them as whom they are. Loving Jesus and putting your faith in him; living as he did. But I do not see any rich white Christians living like Jesus at all. Jesus made friends with the dregs of society. If Jesus were alive today he would be living it up with the prostitutes, the homeless, the drug abusers… all those people that are looked down upon. Those people that need hope and love most of all. He wouldn’t be at some White House dinner sitting next to George Bush making small talk about oil. Sorry.

Through youth group I was taught that I must love everyone. That I needed to live my life honestly and purely and apologize to God for the sins that I committed… that I thought had already been paid thanks to Jesus. As I learned more, being the person that I am, I questioned their words further. I did my own research and found many verses that were left out of the New Testament. Who was fit to REMOVE things from the Bible that they did not deem worthwhile? Did GOD tell people to do this? Certainly the Bible had flaws, considering the pen was in the hand of a human… but honestly? I was scolded for asking questions and doubting.

Right wing conservative Christian’s cry that liberals want God out of everything in America. Obviously this is untrue keeping in mind that President Obama is openly Christian. I will tell you one thing though…
I WANT CHRISTIANITY OUT OF EVERYTHING.

If people want to practice Christianity, OK! If people want Crosses all over their cars and homes and churches and Christian schools… FANTASTIC.
But if you are trying to push FAITH not FACT into my schools, I say no.
If you are trying to demonize certain acts because YOUR FAITH does not deem them MORAL ENOUGH, then I say NO.
If you try to tell me that this country was founded on CHRISTIANITY. I say YOU ARE WRONG.

America was NOT FOUNDED ON CHRISTIANITY.

America was founded on FREEDOM.

Do you know what freedom is? Freedom is being able to do what you want to do. The founding father’s came to America to ESCAPE RELIGIOUS PROSECUTION. They did not come here just to study Christianity. They came here so they could study WHATEVER they wanted. So that ANYONE could be what they wanted and believe their own faith. NOT JUST THEM.

Oh, and most of the founding fathers WERE NOT CHRISTIAN.

Do I think that ‘One Country, Under God” should be removed? No. Do I think ‘In God We Trust’ should be removed from the dollar bill? NO. I want to PRESERVE America’s history. It is complex and interesting full of courage and hate, love and strife. But it is not meant to be founded on bigotry and personal beliefs. It is defending the rights of EVERYONE. Regardless of their skin color, faith, or sexual preference. Whether or not they want an abortion or think it’s wrong. Whether or not they support the government or not.

The singularity is near and religion is blocking that path. Religion dictates ARMAGEDDON. It dictates that man will perish before he can reach the golden age and I am telling you people, we can reach it.
I am not telling you there is no God and I am not telling you that Christianity is wrong. Because I don’t know that, I don’t. I do not claim to be so wise. But I can tell you that when it fogs the path to enlightenment through science and progression and evolution, then it is in the way.

Man can reach the singularity. If you are confused as to what the singularity is, Google is your best friend. It is not a theory, it is an inevitability for man kind. We evolve exponentially, that is a FACT.

So believe in whatever you want to. I think faith is beautiful. But if you dare try to hold ANYONE back from the same rights as you have or from something bigger than all of us, you may as well be dead.

Thanks for reading all this, if you did.

PS:Unless you have something constructive to add or an interesting point of view that may even be opposite to mine... just press the back button. That's all it takes.

I agree with about everything if not everything you said. The ONLY problem with most religions is that they teach intolerance. intolerance comes from fear and fear comes from ignorance. i need pancakes.

Very true. The problem with Christianity is that it teaches both tolerance AND intolerance. Most people unfortunately pick the latter.

You really should read "Why Christianity must Change or Die". I'm working on becoming Jewish, and my Rabbi told me to read that book(he said if I had any doubts still after reading that book, then I wasn't ready)...pretty much summed up everything I had been thinking for much of my later teens to adult life. You'll like it, trust me.

as a universal unitarian, and a libertarian, i agree. however, i would like to point out that "one nation under god" was never in the pledge, at the beginning. it was added years later.

i think saying that part should be optional. but thats just me. i do believe in seperation of church and state.
